Dedicated to the memory of Rhodri de Lloyd

This site is a tribute to Rhodri de Lloyd. He is much loved and will always be remembered.

Rhodri’s boundless energy, infectious positivity and enthusiasm for life were just some of the many reasons I fell in love with him immediately. Our memories of exactly how we first met never did quite tally, but all that matters is that we did.

For more than a decade he was my best friend. The most loving and supportive husband I could have wished for and a wonderful father to our girls.

Rhodri’s zest for life never failed to amaze me. Competing in 24-hour mountain bike races. Skiiing from first lift to last. Dancing all night, always long after I had gone to bed. Even playing a round of golf in his beloved Porthcawl then driving all the way to Edinburgh to play again.

His determination and perseverance meant he excelled at the things he was passionate about. But I especially loved that he was always game to try something new and willing to be put out of his comfort zone, particularly if doing so would mean being there for a friend.

Rhodri had a rare emotional intelligence and a deep kindness. He would instinctively know how to make others feel good, and often just his presence would put people at ease. He was the first to offer help and support; whether patiently dancing with Salsa beginners or endlessly knocking tennis balls back to me. He always appeared to enjoy what must have been pretty boring for him and never made anyone feel it was a chore.

Of course, his inability to resist proving himself in the face of any challenge meant he worked incredibly hard and for long hours, but we always made the most of the time he had away from work.

For eleven years he was my intrepid travel buddy and favourite Salsa partner. I will forever treasure the memories of our incredible adventures - trekking the Sahara, cycling around Cuba and our honeymoon when we climbed an active volcano and camped at its peak.

We shared and enjoyed so much together. From mountain biking, rock climbing and hiking to yoga, salsa classes and slightly scary (for me) skiing trips. Not to mention the home renovations, wedding celebrations and new baby exhaustions.

In the past few years Rhodri managed to combine his two true loves - family and the outdoors - by introducing our girls to his favourite pursuits. Most weekends he would have our little family trekking up mountains, squelching across woodland or biking through trails. We visited beaches come rain or shine and discovered that we all think camping is brilliant.

Rhodri gave me the greatest gift in our two beautiful daughters. He loved being a dad and delighted in every milestone they reached. We didn’t get nearly enough years together, but I’m so glad we made so much of the time we had - and so thankful for all the happiness we shared.

I will forever be grateful that Rhodri chose me.

Thoughts

I was saddened to hear recently about Rhodri. We met at Shiplake College in 1990. Although we were in different houses we were in a few classes together and played in the same cricket teams for five years. In our final year we were both in the first XI team which Rhodri captained. I have fond memories of Rhodri both on and off the cricket field and I'm sad we lost contact after our schooldays. My thoughts and prayers are with Rhodri's family and friends. Piers Woodnutt (95S)

Words do not convey the many wonderful qualities Rhodri possessed; his integrity, kindness and trustworthiness are some of his many virtues. Despite only having seen Rhodri periodically, I will miss him. I felt he was a kindred spirit. I admired his zest for adventure, his love of the outdoors, his bicycling through Cuba, his delight in his family. I admired his joy in dancing, - dancing, even, the tango with both skill and pleasure. We are so lucky to have been with him for a while.
